Explore 9 Ohio Star Variations
The Ohio Star is easy to adapt. Change the center square, cut or piece the corner blocks, swap the surrounding squares, or rotate the star points, and the same nine-patch geometry turns into a whole family of barn quilt designs. Ohio Star
The traditional block: a plain center square, four solid corners and eight hourglass triangles forming the star points.

The star points are split lengthwise into two shades, so each point reads as a ribbon or bow instead of one solid triangle.

Extra diagonals radiate out of the center square, stretching the points into a sunburst that fills the corner squares.

About the Ohio Star block
The Ohio Star is one of the enduring stars of American patchwork. A Smithsonian Ohio Star quilt dates to about 1845, and nineteenth-century examples show the design was well established long before modern quilt patterns were commercially widespread.
Like many traditional blocks, it has appeared under more than one name; the Smithsonian also identifies the pattern as Variable Star or Eight-Pointed Star. Its simple nine-patch structure and strong geometry have kept it popular from bed quilts to modern barn quilts.
Color tip: Classic Ohio Stars use a deep barn red with cream and gold, but navy / mustard / cream is just as iconic.
