The Ohio Star is easy to adapt. Change the center square, cut or piece the corner blocks, swap the surrounding squares, or rotate the star points, and the same nine-patch geometry turns into a whole family of barn quilt designs. Each variation below is a complete pattern you can open in the designer and paint in your own colors.
Ohio Star
The traditional block: a plain center square, four solid corners and eight hourglass triangles forming the star points.

The star points are split lengthwise into two shades, so each point reads as a ribbon or bow instead of one solid triangle.

Extra diagonals radiate out of the center square, stretching the points into a sunburst that fills the corner squares.

The four plain corner squares are cut on the diagonal, adding a second color that frames the star like a mitered border.

Corner squares become small four-patch checkerboards, giving the block a busier, pieced look around the same star.

About the Ohio Star block
The Ohio Star is one of the enduring stars of American patchwork. A Smithsonian Ohio Star quilt dates to about 1845, and nineteenth-century examples show the design was well established long before modern quilt patterns were commercially widespread.
Like many traditional blocks, it has appeared under more than one name; the Smithsonian also identifies the pattern as Variable Star or Eight-Pointed Star. Its simple nine-patch structure and strong geometry have kept it popular from bed quilts to modern barn quilts.
Color tip: Classic Ohio Stars use a deep barn red with cream and gold, but navy / mustard / cream is just as iconic.
