Layout & Sizing

Board sizes, grids, and painted borders

Barn quilt patterns are laid out on a square grid — usually anywhere from 3×3 to 10×10. The size of each square in that grid depends on two things: how big your board is, and how many grid squares your pattern uses. This guide walks through the math and shows when a painted border makes measuring dramatically easier.

The basic math

With no border, each grid square is simply your board width divided by the grid size. A 24" board with a 6×6 pattern gives nice 4" squares. A 24" board with a 7×7 pattern gives awkward 3.428…" squares — a nightmare to measure with a tape.

A painted border reduces the size of the interior area to a friendlier number. Add a 5/8" border to that 24" board and the inner area becomes 22.75", which divided by 7 = a clean 3 1/4" per square. The designer picks the smallest border (usually 3/4" or less) that lands cells on a 1/4" step, so a standard tape measure is all you need.

You don't have to use a border. If you're comfortable measuring in 32nds — or if your pattern's grid divides your board evenly already — leave the border at 0" and paint edge-to-edge.

When a border helps

  • Your grid doesn't divide evenly. Anything where board ÷ grid is not a clean 1/4" — a 7×7 or 9×9 pattern on a 24" board, for example.
  • You want a visual frame. A contrasting border makes the pattern pop, especially on a barn wall or fence.
  • Your board edges are rough. A painted border hides small imperfections along the board's cut edge.

Cheat sheet: cell + border sizes

For each board size and grid, this table shows the suggested minimum border and the resulting square size. A border of 0" means the grid already lays out evenly on 1/4" measurements — no border required.
